Soooo many bookmarks...the girls helped with some too. I love seeing their take on something I'm working on. At first, I often try to guide them into "the way" to do it, but they always remind me that they have their own way.
And its pretty awesome.
These are made from more of those beads from A Greater Gift. Handcrafted in India. Love it.
Today, I popped together some more buttons to send off for other folks to make some loveliness with (please, send me updates! :).
The 'so many bookmarks' tale? They are for something special I have in the works. News on that coming soon...
Today's news?
A winner!
Our middle G drew this one from THE BOWL....and she is....
Hallie (again!) Ha! Too Funny lady! Sew up that pillow and send me some pics, please ! ;)
Goodness, I love it.
Can you guess what this week's drawing will be? Not quite sure where these quilted pieces are going but, I had a jellyroll of Moda's vintage inspired "Punctuation" that I was itching to use so whipped these up.
I'm pretty sure the oranges are going to be sprucing up my kitchen as a cover for the counter where we serve food when guests are over.
The black set will likely be a purse...the red, white and blue? I am thinking bedding for the girl's doll bed (?) and lastly this school themed one? For you!

It's an 8x10 (agreed upon size) so not too imposing on any wall (hopefully! ;).
With a wool felt front and back this hangs much more nicely than the crocheted piece. I think I should have felted the crocheted wool prior to sewing on the embellishments. Oh well, live and learn! Now, what to do with that...?
Most importantly, I'm happy with this and feel it is a nice piece to gift to someone rather than just something to just get done which is what I was having a hard time with before.
Thanks again to Cindy for sending along that photo! It was perfect :)

Late nights with a little teething somebody and busy days with a rockin' preschooler - (not to mention their sibs!) makes for one tired mama these days.

Monday?

I crashed. Head to the pillow and gone kind of crashed. No crafting for me that day...

Same with last night. So while I did craft up some pants for Little Miss...I about passed out before posting my ...well nothing post for Monday.

Truth be told, it was something though...some serious goodness of other kinds.

Little Miss and I had a crazy good time making oodles of goodies (passing on the pics of the chocolate chip cookies - mama can't have a camera in her hand every second now, she might look kind of weird) and generally having a focused, nicely flowing day.

Skipped a beat in the 365 but making my mama's heart totally skip a beat or two.

It was a good day.

And Tues?

Well, yes in fact. There was crafting.

Sorely in need of pants for Little Miss, I poked around for some fabric that would make durable and comfy pants (sometimes tough to come by both criteria in the same pants) and found an Ecosport skirt a lovely lady had sent along my way. The backside had a tear which could have been repaired but, I thought they'd enjoy a new lease on life covering the booty and leggies of Little Miss and her sidekick, Little Miss Jr.
The possibilities may very well be endless with these and honestly, I have to admit, they are a bit addictive. I spent a good portion of this evening ignoring my sink of dishes to make even more of these little blastoids. Love seeing my bag of wool felt scraps dwindling down too...
And in honor of all our creative inspirations ~ this week's drawing!
How about 10 of these little do-dads? I would love, love to see what folks do with them too. So fun.
If you're itching to get your circular mojo on, please feel free to leave a comment and we (well, one of my littles) will draw a winner to announce in Monday's post.
Good Luck and Happy Crafting!
I whipped up this acorn do-dad late into the night. I wasn't sure if it would be a bookmark or what little life it had intended for itself until today when I realized it would look pretty stinkin' cute hanging out by the nature table (which I sorely need to get crackin' on).
Trees have been on my mind lately. The smell of them (pine), the look of them....missing them a bit (I think we need to get hiking more). And birds? Always. Love, love birds.

I was thinking this would be nice in a child's room. Maybe hung inside of a playstand area...it's certainly sturdy enough to withstand some play and wear and tear. Or maybe a pillow? Or possibly repurposed into a bag? So many possibilities if the wall hanging thing doesn't fly. I love that about making things...the possibilities are endless....Kellyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11010074265941725740noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1431400446110277552.post-69679524512003227732011-09-13T21:40:00.000-07:002011-09-16T17:02:47.620-07:00Blast 54 :: Another season

Okay so, technically, this blast was not completed until today (tonight to be exact) but, it was mostly done last night...Still counts, right?

Funny little story...so there I was, with the idea to dress up this little box that we keep these 'goodnight' cards in. Sweet little things with a lovely picture on one side and a bedtime related poem or quote on the other. This was part of our bedtime routine a couple of years ago..
ahem, until the cards migrated to every end of the house that is.

Since the move, I've been finding them here and there. In game boxes, tucked into books and even mixed in with the playkitchen toys (did I mention they migrated?). My answer to this exodus was a last ditch effort to keep them contained. We've had some oval boxes kicking around for a while so I thought one of those would do nicely.

In function, yes? Aesthetically speaking however? Eh, not so much.
Enter the felt.
Well, and some thick burlap/muslin/needlepoint cloth I had on hand as well as some trim.

As I was saying, there I was...kids in bed, sewing away. Almost done. My plan was to create a cover to glue down on the existing cover to the box, just to dress it up a bit.

I didn't like it.

I had cut the burlap fanbric just big enough to cover the oval and was planning on using the trim to go around the edges - on the top. Not such a great idea. Maybe it would have been for a square, but not at all for an oval. So, my bird and moon were complete, it was 1am - it was time for bed.

Phase 2 - I cut out around the bird and moon with the burlap sewn on the back. Perfect! The backing gave it a bit of heft and I loved the rough edge look. Then someone....a little someone...decided she really liked the texture of that bird so I let her chew away. And chew some more. Until I had a very wet mass of felt there. I guess I could have just sewn it on, dripping wet, but decided to opt out of that choice.

Phase 3 - The felt bird was popped in the wash - but not the dryer. I was worried it would shrink up too much. So in the end? I still ended up sewing with a wet.little.bird. Silly, silly me.

Phase 4 - Bird sewn on? Check. Cut out piece of burlap placed over oval? Check. Bottle of E600 ready? Check.
Let the gluing begin.
I tacked down the bird image portion first, then the sides of the oval where the fabric would overhang a bit, then finally, the trim onto the top of the fabric.
Done.
And then? I fell asleep with the babies.
Now?
Hello 1am. Goodness, I almost missed you.
Very much looking forward to using these cards tomorrow night. Or...tonight as the case seems to be.

And our drawing? Of course! I had a young someone who really, really wanted to help with this one. She seemed tapped into the universe and was super eager to pick this week's winner. Funny thing too as I found out later in a general email that its this lady's birthday this weekend....funny world!
Congrats Hallie!! That little mermaid is all yours! Happy Birthday sweet lady!

Good luck to you ladies next week!
Must be all of this chilly fall air making me think of....Christmas. I know...not so fast, right?

Still, I found myself looking into the basket of yarn that I keep next to the couch and was just itching to whip something up. Kind of funny since, truth be told, I have a ridiculous stash of wool and wool blend yarns for someone who can only crochet a chain stitch (albeit, a mean one ;).

My list of to-dos this winter includes teaching myself how to knit. And also learn a few more crochet stitches. That would be nice. Really nice.

'Til then, I'll whip up some chains and figure out how I can use them. Like...mermaid hair for instance. Now, I know this is not a complete craft that I have finished here but, it is one complete head of hair, for one soon to be competed mermaid doll, for one special little girl. Not to mention that I now have one less ball of yarn in the stash to worry about. Life's little pleasures....Kellyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11010074265941725740noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1431400446110277552.post-56644037767392485302011-09-10T18:47:00.000-07:002011-09-10T18:47:57.304-07:00Blast 51 :: Another page...(and a giveaway!)

It's chilly tonight. As we sat around the campfire this evening all of us could feel the shift in seasons that has been hinting it will come...here and there...
Our days have been so full as I imagine others' have been as well. This is a busy time of year full of transitions and new beginnings. I have been feeling not quite ready to let go of summer...or should I say, all of the summer plans I had that we didn't quite make it around to doing. Those days do slip by so quickly, don't they? Next year, most assuredly, yes - next year.
So, I just happened to mention the memory game idea to a certain little someone I know and she as all over it.

Rather than waiting to go thrifting (and remembering my pledge to try and use what I have here) I poured through some scanned images I had on hand and found some matches - lucky!
I love the sweetness of these images...Kellyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11010074265941725740noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1431400446110277552.post-83471882066883404782011-09-08T21:05:00.000-07:002011-09-14T20:28:20.980-07:00Forty 49 :: Family Bling

a little pre - visit saving of a favorite shirt. love those new leases on life...

My sister (who is very "fancy" ) came up for a bit. It was a lovely afternoon of lunch, little ones napping and then when the bigger kids came home - some bling.

I said, "Hey, I'm going to make you a necklace",
to my sis and sure enough,
wouldn't you know,
soon it was a bling party with requests pouring in from the 9 and under crowd. (they do so appreciate their fancy aunty and like to be a bit fancy just like her).

So, we whipped up some bling for the girls and even made one for a special girl far away (we love you, boo boo kitty ;) who missed out on the action (pesky college getting in the way and all..).

Fancy this and fancy that.

note ~ by the way ~ i've had a few requests here and there so, i'm adding some things to my Etsy shop and will continue to do so occasionally. now, this was not my intent at all when i started this project but sometimes, when i have extras, i will be popping them over there. trying to make it all affordable and fun too ~ i might be able to take requests so if you've seen anything you like, feel free to drop me a line... now back to our regular programming ;)Kellyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11010074265941725740noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1431400446110277552.post-37697450707884598732011-09-07T20:38:00.000-07:002011-09-16T17:04:46.013-07:00Blast 48 :: Last minute...

...birthday gifts.

Last evening I was able to scoot out for a bit to celebrate a lovely friend's birthday. Folks who know me understand how nearly impossible it can sometimes be for me to get out the door for a night out let alone be there on time ;) Mind you, not that I don't have support here. It's just , well, you know how it can be, yes? The many little and big to-dos that need to be tended to before you can hit the door. Then making sure everyone is well settled into a groove and all. Don't want to leave them hanging high and dry, right? Well, it must have been in the stars because I actually made it out the door with 5 kids in tow and was even on time!

I even had both shoes on and appropriate clothing...amazing, the little things.

My husband met me after work and he took the kids on an icecream adventure while the littlest one and I had a super lovely visit with the ladies.

It was a bit of a surprise since I didn't know that I might be able to attend until very nearly the time of so I whipped these up from the stash. Just some simple earrings and a pendant with cording. So simple yet, made with love. Gotta love that.

Happy Birthday to you dear, Thalia! So glad it all came together :)

Crafting some organization into our lives that is.

Loving this book of lists I created. My brain has just gone on vacation (well, truth be told, it took a little respite a while ago and I haven't seemed to be able to find it since) so this binder helps keeps me on track. In there I have lists for:
~Lunches and Dinners (lunch being last night's dinner in many cases)
~My chores (broken down by day then a special spot for monthly things)
~Kids chores
~My rhythm with the littlest ones
~After school 'homeschool' with the bigger kids (umm, school did I say? yes, but that's a whole 'nother for another day).

Love, love, loving this. Before, I had a hard time prioritizing things and also, felt the need to get it all done in one day. The list helps to get housework done but also leave time for other things as well. So when what is on the list is done - its done. Much of the pressure to do is gone and I can enjoy the kids more without thinking I should be doing xyz....Before it was completed, I was worried that it might be intimidating seeing it all laid out there and maybe even feel a ton of pressure but, the opposite was true. I found it so liberating. Primarily though, I think it frees up my mental space in knowing what needs to be done each day. Also helps the kids in knowing what to expect each day. All good stuff.

We've had systems like this before but they always fell off the front of the fridge or took a hike as the backside of someone's impromptu drawing session. The binder (complete with page protectors no less! ;) keep's it all together and everyone can access it for easy reference.

So, that's what I was doing before the bookmark ;)Kellyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11010074265941725740noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1431400446110277552.post-75845816378981759472011-09-05T15:52:00.000-07:002011-09-06T18:38:23.661-07:00Blast 46 :: Cap it (and a giveaway!)

above...some of my favorites from last night's crafting session....

Got the bottle caps and epoxy domes from here. Such a wealth of good stuff there! These were such a lot of fun. I had the pictures from some old pics that had been scanned that I purchased ages ago from here and had tucked away with the intent of using them for some collage work. I like this idea much better. It really highlights the sweetness and beauty of those old works...

Now, what to do, what to DO with them? I can make necklaces (and will)...or magnets (and probably will too)...but, I also have more caps and epoxy so I was thinking of thrifting some old golden books and buying 2 of each and punching out identical little pics from them to make sweet travel sized memory games. Fun little birthday gifts, stocking stuffers and what have you, no?

Here is the lot of them from last night....
not too psyched about the head (a little too puckered) but do love the soft cotton terry that little miss will be chomping on.
maybe.
see, she hasn't quite warmed to it yet.
in fact, she just drops it when handed to her unlike her other
toys which she totally loves to attack with gusto.
little miss's pickiness aside, i'm thinking of making a bunch of these to donate to a place where some little gummy mouths could use something made with love and BPA free.
i'll be making a tutorial button in the next few days along with a couple of organizations that would put the dolls to good use. if you know of any orgs that might benefit from these, please share in the comments :)
anyone want to join me in crafting some love?
These are fun to make if you only have about 10 minutes or so (which is about the maximum that I had ;). I'm thinking a set of rainbow mice would be super cute. Or maybe some with numbers on them for a game or put a number or letter or color on the bottom for a memory game? So many possibilities with these little guys, really. Next time though I will follow the directions and glue some cardstock (something from the recycling bin would do) to the base. So, add maybe 2 more minutes to that 10 minute total ;)

There are 3 more of them too sitting in the sewing basket waiting for completion...

Now, before you think I am completely obsessed or should attend a support group of sorts...hear my story.

It was pretty late (surprise, surprise, I know)...and see, my studio is located off of our barn. Which means, I need to walk through the barn to access it. And here's something else, a bat lives in that barn. Now, I totally understand how well and good bats are (they really are awesome) and I loved hanging out in the backyard of the old house with the kids and watching them. But when they fly inches past my face like this one did a couple of weeks ago as I was exiting the studio?

That's a bit closer than I care for, frankly.

I believe I even screamed, "No, NO!" while flailing my arms about (of course, all the while being careful not to drop my precious crafting cargo) as if this would somehow deter the bat from getting any closer.

Another thing that creeps me out...my husband was telling me about how they like to "travel" along the walls...now, I just don't want to look up, or around or in any way witness a bat scuttling along the walls of that barn. So, until my completely irrational ...discomfort with the whole bat thing subsides...I may be crafting from that basket if I don't get my booty out to that studio before dark.

Just sayin'.
Someone, now... I'm not saying who, but someone needed a little curtain between themselves and the dark night.

Don't we all sometimes? I know I do...

This was a quicky, late night blast. Nothing too pretty. Nothing too snazzy. However, something very practical and - bonus - something on the crafting to-do list. Cha- Ching! See, part of my goal here is to also try to find some ways to get around consuming more stuff. I'll try to stretch myself a bit here and make what I can and even try to make what I think I can't. It'll all be good in the end, no doubt.

Forgive my less than eye pleasing pics of the curtain. No eye candy to be found in this blast for sure. I suppose that's what happens when trying to photograph a curtain at almost 11 pm ;) No worries though..in case you're just dying to see pics of my windows with new handmade curtains adorning them...I have about 20 more on the to-do list.
